Did you know that April is Distracted Driving Awareness month?  Here are a few tips to help keep you safe and focused on the road. In a world with cell phones and drive-throughs, there are a few things that can get drivers into dangerous situations on the go.

Avoid using your phone

While cell phones are useful tools, they can be dangerous and distracting while driving. It is best to avoid texts and calls while driving. If you need to make a call, hands-free or Bluetooth devices may still be distracting. It is best to wait until you are done driving, or pull over and park to make an emergency call.
For texts, setting an automatic message to reply while driving is the best option to keep from distraction.

Keep the activity in the car to a minimum

Having rowdy passengers in the car can be a hazard to driving. Make sure that any passengers in the car are not causing distractions for the driver. Passengers can even help the driver to navigate or select radio stations to help the driver keep their focus on the road.

Don’t eat while driving

Drive-throughs can be a quick and convenient way to get a meal, but eating while driving can be dangerous. Eating requires people to take their hands off the wheel, which can make it difficult to react to an emergency. Spilling a food or beverage can also be a huge distraction, or cause you to make a mistake while driving.

Drowsy driving is distracted driving

If you are too tired to focus, then you are too tired to drive. Driving while drowsy makes you significantly more likely to be involved in a crash. If you are tired, try getting a ride or calling a driving service. Don’t get behind the wheel.

Keep a calm and level head while driving

Life can be stressful. Let your time in the car be time that you take for yourself. Keep the music low and keep your mind clear. Having a calm and clear mind will make your drive easier and safer for you and anyone else in the car.

Make sure that when you get in your car, you are level-headed, focused, and keep your concentration on the road ahead of you. Take a moment to center yourself and make sure that you get to your destination safely.  Nobody’s perfect – distracted driving is not easily avoidable.
