How to Respond in the Event of a Car Collision

what to do in the even of a car collision

Do you know what to do after a collision?

Car accidents can be overwhelming and disorienting, and it’s easy to get lost in the moment. It is important to know what to do when it happens before it happens, so you already have a checklist in mind if and when a collision occurs.

First and foremost, make sure that everyone involved is alright. If you see that someone has been injured, call 9-1-1 for help. If you are the injured party, don’t move more than necessary and call 9-1-1. After you have assessed the situation for injuries, turn on your hazard lights, and if possible, move your vehicles out of traffic. If you can, move your car to the shoulder of the road, or a parking lot (if possible) and as far away from moving vehicles as possible. Once in the safest possible location, set road flares or warning cones to warn other drivers to stay away. Once you have done that, call the police to let them know there has been an accident.

Once you are safe and the police are notified, you need to collect information from the other party(s). You need their (1) name, (2) driver’s license number, (3) registration number, (4) insurance company, and (5) insurance number. If you can, take pictures of their driver’s license, insurance card, and license plate number. Also get their personal contact information, like their cell phone number and email address, in case you need to contact them further. It is also a good idea to write down the make and model of the vehicles involved.

Take pictures of the collision, including damage to the vehicles, and the location of the collision, as long as it is safe to do so. Then, write down the time, date, and location of the accident somewhere that is easy to get to. Also, write down any notable landmarks nearby the crash site.

When the police arrive, get the names and badge numbers of the responding officers. Be sure to take down the accident report number and the contact number needed to receive a copy of the report.

Finally, file a claim with your insurance company. You want to do this as soon as possible, and make sure that you have the name of the agent, time of the call, claim number, and contact number all saved for your records.

We all hope to avoid collisions, but if one occurs, it is best to know what you need to do. If it helps, keep a checklist of what to do in your glovebox to reference in the event of a crash.
